Dr. Ross participates in Candy Buy Back

October is such a fun filled month! Fall is in full force and Halloween is right around the corner. Hopefully everyone has their costumes picked out!

Here at Ross Family Dentistry in Loveland, CO we are planning on our second annual Candy Buy Back.

Candy Buy Back

Ross Family Dentistry is pairing up with Operation Gratitude again this year to send candy to the troops overseas. Our office will be open on November 2nd to take any donated candy from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Dr. Ross will pay $1 for every pound, up to five pounds, of unopened candy.

Operation Gratitude is an amazing organization that does so much for our troops! Check out their website at http://www.operationgratitude.com. We are proud to partner with such a wonderful organization in order to support our troops!

Last year, children made cards and wrote letters to be sent along with the candy! We would love to see that again!

Candy’s affect on our teeth

Candy does not cause cavities in our teeth over night; cavities take time to develop and it depends on an individual’s oral hygiene. The type of bacteria naturally found in our mouths likes to feed on the sugar found in candy, and when that happens, it excretes acid which then breaks down our enamel causing cavities. The longer the sugar stays on the teeth, the more likely it will become a cavity.

Candies that are to good limit or completely avoid are: caramels, candy corn, jelly beans, and taffy. These candies are extra sticky, which makes it hard for saliva to neutralize and wash sugar away from the teeth. The plaque in the mouth adheres to sticky candy which demineralizes the enamel on the teeth faster.

Ways to remove candy from the teeth

Brushing and flossing are great ways to remove candy from the teeth right away; however if you do not carry a toothbrush on you all of the time, then swishing with plain water is a good way to wash away it away. Brushing and flossing before bed is going to be the best way to ensure the candy will not adhere to the teeth!

We hope everyone has a great and safe Halloween full of trick sand treats!! Please make sure you stop by Ross Family Dentistry in Loveland, CO and donate some of those treats to our troops!
